Inorganic carbon outwelling from a Mediterranean seagrass meadow using radium isotopes

چکیده

Seagrass meadows are ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems widely recognised for their potential role in climate change mitigation. Previous studies have focused mainly on carbon storage within and sediments. However, little is known about contribution of outwelling (i.e., lateral transport) to seagrass budgets. Here, radium isotopes (223Ra 224Ra) were used assess dissolved inorganic (DIC) total alkalinity (TA) from a Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica meadow during early autumn. DIC was 114 ± 61 mmol m−2 day−1 exceeded above-meadow CO2 outgassing (3 1 day−1). Production uncoupled TA fuelled by net heterotrophy aerobic processes the meadow. The small export (5 6 day−1) implied that ∼90% outwelled may return atmosphere as offshore waters. Combining these fluxes with suggested loss long term burial Overall, acted source autumn season. Further quantifying at multiple spatial temporal scales required better resolve budgets sequestration.

Organic Carbon Metabolism and Carbonate Dynamics in a Mediterranean Seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) Meadow

We measured monthly dissolved oxygen (DO) changes in situ benthic incubations from March 2001 to October 2002 in a Posidonia oceanica meadow and unvegetated sediments of Magalluf Bay (Mallorca Island, Spain) to determine gross primary production (GPP), community respiration (R), and net community production (NCP). From June 2001 to October 2002, we also measured fluxes of dissolved inorganic ca...

Seagrass blue carbon spatial patterns at the meadow-scale

Most information on seagrass carbon burial derives from point measurements, which are sometimes scaled by meadow area to estimate carbon stocks; however, sediment organic carbon (Corg) concentrations may vary with distance from the meadow edge, resulting in spatial gradients that affect the accuracy of stock estimates. We mapped sediment Corg concentrations throughout a large (6 km2) restored s...

Sulfide invasion in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica at Mediterranean fish farms: assessment using stable sulfur isotopes

The effect of organic enrichment of sediments on the composition of stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S), sulfide invasion (Fsulfide) and concentrations of total sulfur (TS) and elemental sulfur (S0) in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica was investigated along transects from 3 Mediterranean fish farms in Spain, Italy and Greece. The δ34S decreased and Fsulfide, TS and S0 decreased with distance from the ...

Contribution of seagrass plants to CO2 capture in a tropical seagrass meadow under experimental disturbance

Coastal vegetative habitats are known to be highly productive environments with a high ability to capture and store carbon. During disturbance this important function could be compromised as plant photosynthetic capacity, biomass, and/or growth are reduced. To evaluate effects of disturbance on CO2 capture in plants we performed a five-month manipulative experiment in a tropical seagrass (Thala...
